French Market
Learning experience for primary school pupils
As part of their Foreign Language Leaders course, Year 10 French students invited almost 200 children from our feeder primary schools to a French Market at the High School on 23 April 2009.
The Year 5 pupils visited seven stalls, where they took part in themed activities and games run by the Hellesdon students, introducing them to French topics such as colours, food, numbers, clothes, fruit and parts of the body.
Each young learner was given a guidebook containing the phrases they would need, information on pronunciation, and consolidation exercises designed by the GCSE students. On successful completion of each activity, the young learners received a sticker for their booklet.
The language leaders evaluated their own activities, examining what they thought went well and what they would change for another time.

Feedback
"The overwhelming response was positive: please could we come again if you repeat the activity next year?" (Staff of Horsford Junior School )
"It was very fun and the best part of the day was eating the ice cream and the other food. But the games were the best best – and I love the colour game." (Scott)
"I liked the bit when we were in groups and we had a picture of a clothes item and we had to run and put on the clothes on the picture. The winner was the group who wasa fully dressed at the end." (Aron)
"It was fun and I learned lots more French. The stall runners were nice, kind and helpful." (Caitlin)
"I thought it was bad in some ways because it didn't go on for long. " (Chloe)
"The children who ran the stalls were good at their jobs." (Reyes)
"Learning about the human body was ok because it was fun learning how to pronounce the words." (Robbie)
"I thought your French market was brilliant, It was the best French market I've ever been on… You didn't seem nervous at all. Merci." (Morgan)
"Merci! I appreciated what you did for year five! I'm an expert at French because of you!" (Jade)
"I absolutely loved the market you held for me. It has really helped me with my French. ( Cheyenne )"
Evaluation
The language leaders evaluated their own activities, examining what they thought went well and what they would change for another time.
"I really enjoyed ‘being teacher' – it helped improve my knowledge because I was repeating it over again. I had to constantly adapt with each group because of different abilities and how confident the group was as a whole."
"We would be better equiped if we were to do the stall again and ensure the activities catered for all abilities. It was an enjoyable and valuable experience, but fairly repetitive to carry out the same presentation several times in the day."
"Our organization got better with the first few games. We would definitely keep the forfeits because the children said they liked them. Really fun, challenging, but rewarding!"
Many thanks to Mrs Robinson for all her help with organizing the event.
