A Taste of Russian
On 9 February 2010, a class made up of Year 6 children from Kinsale, Firside and Horsford came to HHS for a Russian lesson led by GCSE students in Year 10.
Through their own games and activities, Alice, Eddy, Ellie, Liza and Hariette taught their young pupils to say and write their names in Russian, the names of some items of clothing, and basic numbers.
What they said about the experience:
“I've learnt to take things really slowly!...”“I learnt to be encouraging, and how important it is for clarity when teaching.”
“It was nice to show younger children about a subject I enjoy, and have some ‘teaching' experience.”
(Hellesdon students)
“It was really good and I am going to try and learn more. It was nice to work with other people from other schools and to have the Year 10s teaching us. We learnt how to say Russian and read it. Also how to write my name. And I found out what languages lessons at high school are like.”
(Firside pupil)
“It's really challenging to try and remember new things, but fun as well. It's good to meet people from other schools and help each other out. I learnt how you can help other people even if you haven't ever seen them before.”
(Horsford pupil)
“It has been really fun and I have learnt a lot! It was interesting meeting other people from the other schools. It was awesome!”
(Kinsale pupil)
Many thanks to the GCSE Russian students, Mrs Robinson for organizing the visit and to Ms Lovick for her help with transporting the children.
