Success at Norfolk languages competition
Talented Hellesdon students at Wymondham College
On 6 July, HHS sent its first delegation to the annual Norfolk schools' MFL speaking competition at Wymondham College . Seven students from years 8, 9 and 10 represented Hellesdon, giving presentations in French in front of other young people and their teachers from around the county, as well as a panel of judges. There were about 60 entrants from 12 schools, including several specialist language colleges.
Taking part was a valuable experience for all involved, who had a chance to display their language skills, speak in public, enjoy some entertaining presentations of a high standard and meet other talented young linguists.
At the start of the event, we heard from local business leaders and people involved in school/business projects about the increasing importance of languages for international communication and accessing new markets. At lunchtime, in keeping with the business theme, the students got together with peers from other schools to make foreign-language video adverts.
All the Hellesdon students did really well, bringing honour on the MFL department and some admiring comments from spectators. In the Key Stage 4 category, Alice Godfrey was highly commended, and of about 20 Key Stage 3 entries, the dynamic duo of Keenan Groom and Max Emerson were awarded first prize for their portrayal of Batman and the Joker: a sketch that combined dark humour, postmodern irony, pyschological intensity and facepaint.
Well done, Charlotte, Lizzy, Megan, Max, Keenan, Alice and Emma!
