Foreign Language Leaders
Year 10 French students develop leadership skills
As part of Hellesdon High School's leadership development programme, students in the first year of GCSE French in 2008-09 followed a course leading to the Foreign Language Leaders award.
Congratulations to all those involved, particularly Katie, Hannah, Zannah, Elise, Emma, Alex, Frankie, Anna, Dannie, Mandy and Cathy, who receive certificates.
The course involved some teaching of younger pupils, organizing a French Market for primary schoolchildren, taking responsibility for starter activities in their own lessons, and developing confidence and leadership skills in the process.
Unit 1: Planning, preparing and assisting a simple language activity

- Incorporating evaluation into future planning
- Working as a team
Unit 2: Communicating and motivating participants
- Verbal and non-verbal communication
- Using prizes and forfeits, and setting achievable goals
Unit 3: Cultural understanding
- Researching a website about French-speaking countries
- Using and referencing resources
Unit 4: Language games and activities
- Selecting appropriate language games
- Explaining rules, involving and motivating participants
Unit 5: Organize and run a language festival for younger participants
- The successful French Market held in April 2009
Unit 6: Demonstration of leadership skills in foreign languages
- Planning, delivering and evaluating language activities
- A total of one hour of individual leadership experience
